Looking At Art Up Close

                                                          William deKooning's Woman IV

We visited the Nelson Atkins Museum to look at paintings by William deKooning and Richard Diebenkorn.  Looking at these paintings in person is a much different experience than looking at them in books.  Details such as underpainting, thick textured paint, and drips are not visible in most reproductions. The paintings can look much different up close than far away.

Diebenkorn and deKooning both re-worked their paintings in many stages.  Each corner of these paintings is important to the overall composition.  Looking at these details closely, each part is a mini- paintings in itself.  Here are the details of these paintings.
