Final Friday Update: The Love Garden

As posted earlier, this month's Final Friday looks to be a good one!
With all the great music and art, we will for sure check out the Love Garden tonight. We just got notice that Christa Dalien has just arranged a show called Songs Made Just for You where she will show porcelain work about two of our favorite things: LP's and cats.
Christa says this about her work: These are works that were made specifically to be shown at Love Garden. Both Adam and I have collected records since we were 15 (like many people). We haul them around whenever we move, and have many great memories that surround them. We love our local record store. I wanted to have fun with a new medium and this is what came of me + ceramics. Some are based on real albums others are just silly.

Here is what the Facebook invite says: This Final Friday is a busy one and I am so excited that there is so much to do. I have been working on some ceramic pieces to show at Love Garden Sounds and they are finally ready for you to see! Expect Lp's and Cats.

Christopher Luxem, who is awesome will perform a set at 7:30. He will be singing your favorite Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin songs.

Just in time for summer mixes, these screen printed tape inserts will be waiting for you at Love Garden tonight. They are free!

Christa is currently working on an installation piece in KCMO where she is draping a building with icicles.

Karen's Top Five Picks for May's Final Friday

This month's Final Friday is a good one. Here are my top five picks for this month's Final Friday.

1. Henry Schneiderman I don't Feel Like it
The Invisible Hand  801 1/2 Massachusetts ( Above the Burger Stand)

Henry's thesis installation show at KU's Art and Design was one of my favorite shows of the year.  Henry will present work from his thesis show at the Invisible Hand.  The aluminum mesh sculptures will be presented in tight groups, showing that "Detachment can exist even in the most tightly knit groups.

2. Body of Work: Interpretations of the Live Figure
TJ Tangpuz Installation
Lawrence Arts Center 940 New Hampshire

TJ Tangpuz will debut his new installation piece for the show.  His sculpture will rotate around a pole located in the main gallery.
The show Body of Work is definitely worth seeing.

3. Ashley Laird Turning Back the Clock
Bourgeois Pig 6 E. 9th

Here is her statement about her work: What year is it? Judging from the work of the Kansas Legislature, in regards to the rights of women, it could be 1960. This body of work was motivated (in part) by the ridiculous and absurd but deathly serious attempts of our elected officials to turn back the clock.

4. Clinton Ricketts and Andrew Burkitt: The Sundowners
Wonder Fair 803 Massachusetts ( sort of above the Burger Stand)

Here is what Wonder Fair has to say about this show: Ricketts and Burkitt both create prints combining etching, to produce images including, but not limited to: floating Babe Ruth heads, pretty ladies drawn in scary ways, painterly expressions and ugly men in funny hats. Watch the walls of the Wonder Fair explode with shape and color.

5. Art Tougeau Street Party
940 New Hampshire

The parade is Saturday, but the preview allows a great up close view of the art cars.  We can't wait to see what we'll see this year.

Body of Work Panel Discussion Tonight at the Arts Center

Tonight, artists from the art show Body of Work will speak in a panel discussion at the Arts Center.  A figure model will join the panel where she'll describe what it is like to model nude in front of a group of people.  The talk should be interesting.

More on book matters, we love this idea to share books by Caroljean Brune.  She has built a little free library in her neighborhood. According to Caroljean, the library at 612 W. 17th is now "open to everyone in the community who loves books and reading.  It's hours are 24/7 and the rules are quite simple...take a book, return a book."

What's going on in LFK?

One of the lead stories in Lawrence.com today is “Lawrence Laundry: Mixing it up with sunglasses this summer” where the writer is “frustrated” about losing her sunglasses.   However, there is a lot going on in Lawrence, and we have the scoop on what’s happening. See article: http://www.lawrence.com/news/2012/may/14/lawrence-laundry-mix-it-sunglasses-summer/

Visit the new music scene “Pass the Hat” at the Percolator today.  It’s a potluck followed by a performance by Bears of Blue River (from Chicago), CS Luxem, and Oils. Read more about this from our friends at the Larryville Chronicles.http://www.larryvillechronicles.blogspot.com/2012/05/lfk-gets-new-music-series-at-percolator.html
At the Arts Center, check out the poetry installation in the front window.  Sit in the couch and chair and pick up the many poetry books that are scattered around (We added a small poem to the wall).
The galleries at the Arts Center are empty as they are getting ready for the Body of Work show.  Mark your calendars for the opening this Friday, the 18th from 7:00-9:00.
Have a beer at the new scenester spot in Lawrence, Frank’s North Star Tavern.

And here is one final thing for our blog today from the archives of art history from 1965.  It is a note from Andy Warhol’s landlord asking him to stop having parties in his legendary factory studio.
